Dr. Joy McLaughlin
Instructor (Reaching ELLs with ELD Standards)
Dr. Joy McLaughlin taught French to high school students in her early career and later taught English as a Second Language to high school students in Winston-Salem / Forsyth County for 17 years. She was chosen as Teacher of the Year for Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools in 1993. Dr. McLaughlin became ESL Lead Teacher for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools in 1999, and Director of LEP Programs in 2001 for Asheboro City Schools.
In 2001, she began the Latino Coalition in Randolph County, and received the Hispanic League of the Piedmont Triad Service Award in 2003. She taught ESL Methods courses at UNC-Pembroke and UNC Greensboro, and a SIOP course for regular classroom teachers at Salem College.
Dr. McLaughlin retired from Asheboro City Schools in Oct. 2007 and presently works as an education consultant.
