Jim Barber was LEARN NC's Executive Director from 1999 through 2006. Prior to that from 1983 to 1999, he was first the Controller for the State Board of Education, then the Associate Superintendent for Financial and Personnel Services with the Department of Public Instruction.

Jim serves on the Boards of Directors of the North Carolina Public School Forum and the State Employees' Credit Union. He was a member of the Governor's Character Education Advisory Committee, the NC Partner's Leadership Council, and the E-Learning Commission, and is a principal investigator with the National Research Center for Rural Education Support.

A native of upstate New York, Jim graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Colgate University in 1968, and then served in the US Navy with the Supply Corps in Vietnam, and with the Naval Audit Service in Boston. He earned his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1974.
