Chasing the Sun is a companion website to a PBS series that explores the history of commercial aviation as seen through the eyes of its innovators.

This website takes a look at fascinating flight history through a timeline, planes, innovators, and companies. The aviation timeline begins with the Wright Brothers as the first to fly a powered aircraft through the retirement of British Airways' retirement of the Concordes fleet in 2003. Planes will guide you to the history and specifications of early planes, modern airliners, the jet age, and jumbo jets. Airplane innovators will introduce you to the many personalities involved in commercial aviation from pilots and airplane builders to inventors and company executives. In the Companies section, you will learn all about the history of major airlines such as TWA and Pan Am as well as major manufacturers such as Boeing and Douglas.

Explore the Web Routes and Resources sections for links to additional commercial airline information not covered on this website, additional innovators, and other planes. On the Resources page, teachers will also find links to a collection of related lesson plans.
