CivilWar@Smithsonian is produced by the National Portrait Gallery and is dedicated to examining the Civil War through the Smithsonian Institution's extensive and manifold collections. This online exhibit consists of four sections.

The Smithsonian section includes a mini collection of materials that give a snapshot of the Smithsonian Institution at the time of the Civil War. These materials include images of the the castle, images and biographical data for Joseph Henry, the Institution's first secretary, his daughter's diary, and more.

The items in the Collections section range in interest from personal effects, Abraham Lincoln's black beaver top hat, to examples of uniforms and weapons, some of which were manufactured in the tens of thousands. Find information, images, primary sources, and artifacts that relate to slavery and abolition, Abraham Lincoln, Mary Grady, Appomattox, and other military topics.

This website also provides a timeline of events from 1859-1865 and a list of web links and printed materials to compliment the information found in this exhibit.
