“Wind, water, ice, insects, and even people help to move soil and wear away the surface of the planet. Your mission is to investigate one way that erosion shapes your neighborhood and then write about it.”

Hang out with Dirtmeister at Scholastic while you learn about some of the factors that cause erosion and then use an observation sheet to investigate an erosion area in your neighborhood. Record answers to such questions as:

  • What is the example of erosion happening around your neighborhood or local area?
  • What agent or force is causing the erosion to happen?
  • Where is the eroded material going?
  • What can be done in order to reduce the amount of erosion?

Finally use your recording to construct a paragraph about the soil erosion that you discovered and investigated.

This activity is accompanied by a teacher's guide and there are sample paragraphs from other students who have completed the activity.
