“Robert Pinsky, the 39th Poet Laureate of the United States, founded the Favorite Poem Project shortly after the Library of Congress appointed him to the post in 1997. Since its launch, the Favorite Poem Project has been dedicated to celebrating, documenting and promoting poetry's role in Americans' lives.”

On its website, students and teachers will find a collection of 50 short video documentaries that showcase individual Americans reading and speaking personally about poems they love. The poems most appreciated by both common and eminent Americans are read aloud and are presented with the person's explanation about why this poem is their favorite, providing contextual material that can help you to better understand the poem and the person who chooses that poem as their favorite. Transcripts of the poems read on the video are provided.

There are also selections from the lesson plans developed by teachers as well as examples of successful poetry events in schools. Additionally there is a sampling of the poetry published in this project's anthologies.
