Mineralogy 4 Kids
This colorful site starts with the mineral groups. There are native elements along with sulfides, halides, sulfates, carbonates, oxides and silicates. Click on each one of these to see the minerals that are common to each group.
Next, click on the mineral properties box. Here there are clickable boxes that provide in-depth information on the distinctive physical properties such as color, crystal form, cleavage, luster, and streak.
The Minerals in Your House area takes the viewer to the different rooms in a house and show the minerals that make up the items that may be found in each room. Student may be surprised to see how many minerals make up toothpaste, for instance.
Check out All About Crystals. This area of the site explains the symmetrical atomic structure, shape, and chemicals that are found in crystals.
The site also has an area for students to Ask-a-Mineralogist questions they have and a games area that teaches mineralogy in a fun way.
