National Agricultural Library
The National Agricultural Library in Beltsville, Md., has a solid presence on the Web. Its Agriculture Network Information Center (AgNIC) site is "a guide to quality agricultural information on the Internet" that would be a good starting point for Internet research on topics related to agriculture. Users can search the catalog or browse by subject. Topics covered include agricultural economics, animal and veterinary science, consumer and family studies, earth and environmental science, nutrition, forestry, and farming. NAL also provides information centers on a variety of topics, including alternative farming, animal welfare, nutrition, and water quality; and a directory of Youth & Kids Pages in Agriculture.
Special collections of the library include some unique online content. Letters of Thomas Jefferson consists of eleven letters written between 1786-1819 to, from, and about Thomas Jefferson. The agricultural content includes nursery stock, seeds, a mould board plough attachment invented by Jefferson, and requests for appointments to federal agricultural offices. The USDA Pomological Watercolor Collection includes images published to illustrated accounts of new varieties for fruit growers and breeders 1886 to 1900.
