North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve (NCNERR)
In 1982, the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve (NCNERR) was established to preserve these valuable habitats for long-term research, monitoring, education, and other compatible uses. The NCNERR consists of four separate components, Currituck Banks, Rachel Carson, Masonboro Island, and Zeke's Island. As part of a national system of estuarine reserves, these sites are managed by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Division of Coastal Management, as a resource for all its citizens. It is necessary to preserve and learn how to best manage these sites because of the many benefits these estuaries provide.
Still photos, current information on aquatic life, and experiments are available on this web site. Live streaming video field trips will be offered annually. There is A Field Guide to Exploring the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve with pictures and description of the animals and plants of the estuary.
Teachers may contact the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve for educational material, including a free video, "Waters of Life" on the North Carolina Estuary. Phone: 252-728-2170 Fax: 252-728-6273 Email: ncnerr@starfishnet.com
