PlaneMath
PlaneMath is a place to learn cool things about math and aeronautics from InfoUse and NASA. The mission of this project is “to stimulate and motivate students with physical disabilities in grades 4-7 to pursue aeronautics-related careers via the development and delivery of accessible math education materials on the Internet.”
This website consists of a series of aeronautic story-based activities and interactives based on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards that will build student abilities in such areas as:
- Measurement
- Numbers and Number Relationships
- Computation and Estimation
- Problem Solving
- Estimation
- Number Sense and Numeration
- Statistics and Probability
- Patterns and Relationships
Examples include finding the shortest flight path between two cities, converting 24 hour time to 12 hour time, and identifying polygons. Students will fly a herd of buffalo to the prairie, learn to fly a rescue helicopter, build a kite, and much more.
Each of the activities is accompanied by a teacher guide and an introduction to a math or aeronautical professional with information about his or her career.
