Elementary students will learn a lot about the types of rocks and how they are formed by exploring this website. Teachers will find lesson plans, activities, and collaboration ideas for teaching students about igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock formation.

Rock Hounds begins with a slide show on safety when collecting rocks. Then students can take a safety quiz.

The site includes animations to show how rocks are formed. It also shows the different types of rocks within each group. For instance, sandstone, limestone, shale, conglomerate, and gypsum are all sedimentary rocks. The site also has pictures of the different types of rocks. After viewing and reading about the rocks, take the Rock Hound quiz and work the crossword puzzles.
