Established in 1986, Steamtown is located in the Scranton yard of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad, one of the earliest rail lines in northeastern Pennsylvania. The Steamtown collection consists of locomotives, freight cars, passenger cars and maintenance-of-way equipment from several historic railroads.

This website provides information about the development of the steam engine and its importance to the economy of the United States. A timeline takes the viewer from the development of the first successful steam locomotive in Wales in 1804 to 1995, when Steamtown National Historic Site officially opened.

A cross-section of a steam locomotive shows how a steam locomotive works with an explanation of each section. There are also images of all the locomotives, passenger and freight cars, and maintenance cars which can be found at the museum.
