Vietnam Veterans' Memorial
The homepage of this site is basic information about the Vietnam Memorial and events there. The site contains much more, however. There is a Virtual Wall where students can read about veterans who died in the Vietnam War. Students can post rememberances for particular soldiers there. Teachers will find a unit of study on Vietnam in the section Teach Vietnam. There is an Echoes from the Wall Teachers' Guide, and the following modules: Module 1: Escalating Involvement in the Vietnam War, Module 2: Conflict on the Home Front, Module 3: Those Who Served, Module 4: The Vietnamese and Vietnam, Module 5: The Wall as Healer, Module 6: The Legacy of the Vietnam War. The Echoes From The Wall Teachers' Guide contains materials and student assignments. The lessons can be used as stand-alone lessons to be taught in a traditional format of lecture, discussion, and student worksheets or as a basis for team learning in which teams of students teach their classmates about the Vietnam War era. There is information on teaching techniques such as Hints for Building Effective Learning Teams, Tools For Team Learning, a Brainstorming section and information on Rounds (a process in which every student gets to participate). There is a section titled Evaluating Student Participation in Team Learning and there is information on creating learning contracts with each student team. Echoes From The Wall is an interactive educational tool and teachers can order free resources from the site as well as download the modules and lessons. Additionally, there is a travelling half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., designed to travel to communities throughout the United States. Students can look into having the replica come to their communities.
