Teaching English Language Learners in Your Online Course - Carolina Online Teacher Program
This course is part of the Carolina Online Teacher Program (COLT), a series of courses designed to prepare online instructors.
Begins March 17
The course is designed as an introduction to working with English language learners in the online classroom. Specifically, the course will:
- Provide a deeper insight into English language learners' lives and cultural struggles
- Illustrate the significance of acquiring academic English and social English
- Consider the experience of U.S. schooling through the eyes of ELL students
- Offer teachers an opportunity to utilize strategies and ideas in their own classes
Prerequisites
- Blackboard or Moodle Training or approved substitute
- Teaching Online Courses
- Facilitating Online Collaboration
Course objectives
Although there will be a variety of activities and readings designed to teach you the specifics of teaching English language learners online, there are several overarching goals we hope you'll achieve:
- Familiarize yourself with common methods and strategies used to teach ELLs content in an online forum
- Identify the differences between social and academic language skills
- Understand the importance of making accommodations and modifications for English language learners
- Explore differentiation strategies that are effective for both ELL students and native English speakers
- Understand the role culture and other language variables play in the acquisition of English
- Prepare an assessment for a specific lesson plan of your choosing
