e-Learning for Educators - Getting Ready for Algebra by Using Virtual Manipulatives
This course is offered as a part of the e-Learning for Educators project, a partnership between LEARN NC, The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at North Carolina State University College of Education, UNC-TV, DPI, and the North Carolina Virtual Public School. Course completed (taught April 27–June 14)
Introduce virtual manipulatives in your classroom to help students succeed in algebra. You'll explore the 17 algebra readiness indicators developed by the Southern Region Education Board and the Educational Testing Service, including the five process indicators and the 12 content and skills indicators.
By the end of the course, you will complete a technology-enhanced classroom project for your students that is aligned to National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and state standards.
Course goals
This online course will enable participants to:
- Identify the essential content and process readiness indicators for student success in Algebra I
- Identify virtual manipulatives and interactive applets that target the essential skills and knowledge aligned with each of the content readiness indicators
- Analyze virtual manipulatives and interactive applets according to given criteria including: alignment with mathematics learning goals, instructional strengths and limitations, ease of use, and availability of support materials
- Develop activities that use virtual manipulatives and interactive applets to target the essential skills and knowledge required to meet the essential algebra readiness indicators
Audience
This course is appropriate for algebra teachers in grades 7-12.

This course addresses the following North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards:

Time commitment
Approximately 2-5 hours per week

You must teach math to take this course.
