The Beaufort, Roanoke and Southport Maritime Museums' mission is to educate visitors to the environmental issues that affect the North Carolina coast, the diverse natural history of the area, and the rich maritime heritage through their exhibits and publications. The staff of the museums also provides in-house and outreach programs and welcomes field trip groups.
The museums' programs include boat building, watercraft, and environmental education. The main Maritime Museum is in Beaufort. The two regional museums are in Southport and on Roanoke Island.
The Maritime Museum and its two branches hold special workshops and training programs for school teachers, some of them for renewal credits. The Education branch sends teacher packages to thousands of the state's teachers to prepare them for museum tours and for special programs. Several museum programs provide scholarships for low-income school children.
The museums are open 360 days each year from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturdays, and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays, closing only for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day holidays (call for exact dates). Email maritime@ncmail.net for more information.

- Workshops typically serve fewer than 20 educators per session.
- Offerings are based on subject matter content.
- Sessions offered are a combination of lecture and processing activities with time to process the learning with other participants.
- Follow-up activities include a required evaluation of the professional development session.
- Materials may be included in the cost of the workshops while some sessions have a materials charge.
