Bakers Mountain
Hickory, NC (http://www.co.catawba.nc.us/depts/parks/bakrmain.asp)
Located on the highest point of elevation in Catawba County (1780 feet), Bakers Mountain is a wonderful place to explore the wildlife and plants of the foothills of western North Carolina. The park, Hickory's best kept secret, has nearly six miles of trails in which to see the native flora and fauna of the area. The mixed hardwood forest of Chestnut trees and Mountain Laurel surround hikers as they make their way to the top of the mountain where they can view Catawba County from an observation area and gazebo.
Park Rangers are available to take students on guided tours where they will learn about wildflowers, trees, birds, and snakes. The curriculum used comes from Project Learning Tree. Tours are free of charge. Experts are also available to come to classrooms to talk to students about the rich natural heritage of the county.
The entrance to the park is located on Bakers Mountain Road just off Old Shelby Road. The park is open Friday - Monday only. Contact Ranger John Sutton at jsutton@catawbacountync.gov or 828-312-4844 for more information and to arrange a program.
