Allison Woods
Statesville, NC (http://www.allison-woods.org/)
Located in the Central Piedmont of North Carolina, Allison Woods is an extensive hardwood forest covering over a thousand acres straddling the South Yadkin River and includes examples of nearly every Piedmont habitat. Since 1994, the Allison Woods Foundation has sponsored Spring and Fall Environmental Focus Weeks in cooperation with Iredell/Statesville Schools. In the past six years, more than 4,000 students have spent a day in the "outdoor classroom" of Allison Woods learning about field, forest, aquatic, and wetland habitats.
Teachers may choose from several program topics (water quality, soil, biodiversity, forest ecosystem, rocks and minerals, and topography) or work with the education staff to design a custom program for their students. Each educational opportunity introduces the topic and offers students the chance to participate in some type of hands-on activity (water/soil testing, mapping, measuring, observing, etc.). All programs are correlated to meet objectives of the North Carolina Science Curriculum.
Allison Woods is located at 2106 Turnersburg Highway near Statesville. The site is open by appointment. For more information call 704-507-5813 or email info@allison-woods.org
