The Nature Center serves as the gateway to the 1,290-acre Latta Plantation Nature Preserve and is the source for educational programs and information on the preserve's flora and fauna. It is Mecklenburg County's largest preserve and "forms a green peninsula extending into Mountain Island Lake and protects a natural heritage site and several endangered plants."

The Latta Plantation Nature Center offers environmental education programs for Pre-K through 12th grade students as well as scout troops, youth groups, and other organized groups.
