Located in Boomer, North Carolina at YMCA Camp Harrison, the The Ecology Center at Herring Ridge was “developed to create an awareness and understanding of our natural environment.” Single day programs for students in 4th through 12th grades promote learning about the natural world. They will learn about environmental concepts in this beautiful 140 acre lake and wetland area. The programs are facilitated by a staff with degrees in biology, conservation, forestry, education, and recreation. The Ecology Center's premier program is a residential science program for 5th and 6th graders called Planet Herring Ridge. This unique program incorporates environmental science and character education and is designed to meet North Carolina curriculum standards for grades 5 and 6.
At the Center, students will have hands-on experience with the scientific process and work on research-based projects specific to the Brushy Mountains. They will learn about things that they can do everyday to be good stewards to the Earth. Programs topics include water science, forest ecology, and living on the land. Middle and high school students will learn valuable skills while participating in research projects which may include “soil, air and water quality studies, as well as butterfly monitoring in fall and amphibian and reptile monitoring in spring.”
