The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates the dam at the W. Kerr Scott Reservoir. It was created to protect the Yadkin River Valley from devastating flooding. Today the project provides a place for recreation, management of wildlife, flood control, and water supply. The Visitor Assistance Center gives an educational overview of the project's natural resources. A comprehensive self-guided trail is located adjacent to the center.
