Will the best candidate win?

Activities in this lesson allow students to explore alternative voting methods. Students discover what advantages and disadvantages each method offers and also see that each fails, in some way, to satisfy some desirable properties.

Telling racing stories

In this lesson, students model races in which runners start from various positions. They enter numbers in a table of values, model races on a coordinate grid, and compare the results. Students begin to develop an understanding of linear relationships. Illuminations provides several helpful activity sheets and detailed instructions for completing the lesson.

The five senses -- hearing

In this lesson, students will learn about sound vibrations by participating in a hands-on activity, and will conclude the activity by writing a journal entry about what they have learned.

Reading guides

In this lesson, students will work in groups to develop reading guides for non-fiction books about science, social studies, and other subjects. For each book, students will identify useful features and where the important information can be found. Overviewing and identifying text features will help students determine how to approach various non-fiction resources.
