The Little Yellow Chicken
The students will be following an integrated unit on "Helping." They will use reading, math, social studies, science, technology, and other areas of study. Students will read, as a group, the book The Little Yellow Chicken by Joy Cowley. The students will be incorporating prediction, prior knowledge, comprehension skills, and language skills for the word family "-ook", the vowel sound "e", and the exclamation mark. The technology to be utilized by the students consists of use of the HyperStudio for math review, Math Software, Graph Club to create a graph of favorite party foods, Inspiration to guide and create graphic organizers for writing, and the Ultimate Writing Machine to create their own version of The Little Yellow Chicken. They will also incorporate color words to practice the Spanish Language.
A lesson plan for grade 1 English Language Arts and Mathematics
Learning outcomes
Students will:
- be introduced to The Little Yellow Chicken by Joy Cowley. They will discuss the title and cover of the book and then make predictions about the story.
- have a prior knowledge discussion on helping and how they help at home.
- have a shared reading of the book and then answer questions about the book.
- re-read the book with the teacher to confirm their understanding of the story. After re-reading, students will begin a language experience story of a new invention of the story.
- view the group story on the TV monitor by using the scan converter. Students will be introduced to the technology terms needed to identify and utilize tools necessary to accomplish this task.

Pre-activities
Students will have already had some discussion about helping and some knowledge of the computer.
Activities
Part 1
- The teacher will read and discuss The Little Yellow Chicken. The students will discuss helping the characters to make better choices. They will relate this to their own lives by identifying how they are helpers and ways they can encourage others to be helpers (by being nice even when they have not been helped).
- The students will graph their favorite party foods and colors in English and Spanish, and then discuss the findings of their graphs.
- The students will then complete a HyperStudio activity in which they will use their math skills to add, count, and match one-to-one correspondence.
- The students will re-write The Little Yellow Chicken with an outcome of their own using the Ultimate Writing Machine.
Part 2
- As a class, students will read The Little Yellow Chicken for shared reading.
- The students will then discuss possible changes to the story, share their ideas in the large group, and then agree on how to change the story. As a class, they will create a new invention of the story.
- As a class, students will create the invented Multimedia story using Ultimate Writing and Creativity Center. The multimedia story will be displayed and discussed using the television/computer hookup.
- Using the class story as an example, students will learn how to create a multimedia story and presentation using the correct technology terminology. Students will scan graphics and add graphics, text, and sound using appropriate technology tools and correct keyboarding techniques appropriate for their developmental and instructional level.
- Students will be divided into cooperative groups to create their own multimedia story using The Little Yellow Chicken as the model for the story. With the assistance of an adult, students will scan graphics and add graphics, text, and sound using appropriate technology tools and correct keyboarding techniques for their developmental and instructional levels. The new stroy will be typed using the Ultimate Writing and Creativity Center.
- The groups will display and present their multimedia stories to the class.
- After reading the story (third reading) the students will create a class graph of their favorite party foods using GraphClub. They will enter their findings and answer questions about graphs and graphing.
Part 3
- Students will re-read The Little Yellow Chicken and discuss the party foods from the story. They will then compare and contrast their own favorite party foods with those of the story.
- The computer technologist or classroom teacher from the school will guide students to create a graph using The Graph Club to create a class graph of their favorite party foods. She or he will display the graph using the scan converter and a TV monitor for the students to view the graph as they cooperatively create it.
- The students will then answer questions about the graph and discuss the results.
- Students will divide into groups and be guided in printing a copy of the class graph for cooperative discussions of what they have discovered.
- Students will demonstrate their understanding of necessary technology terms to implement the printing process. They will also begin learning terminology specific to the use and creating of spreadsheets.
- Students will, with assistance of the Spanish or classroom teacher, translate party foods and numbers into Spanish.
- The students will use HyperStudio to practice number recognition, counting, and one-to-one correspondence. They will be afforded the opportunity to practice their ordinal number knowledge in a “MathoSaurus” program to reward their appropriate progress through HyperStudio.
- Students will use their graphing knowledge and graphs from the Graph Club to demonstrate their understanding of one-to-one correspondence.
- They will then create (in small groups) a number story program to be implemented by fellow classmates using the multimedia program Kid Pix or HyperStudio.
Part 4
- Students will review the one-to-one matching from the graphing activity and discuss why the numbers match.
- They will also review counting by reviewing the results of the graph.
- Students will work in pairs to participate in a teacher-created HyperStudio presentation on number sense (see attached). The students will implement prediction, prior knowledge, comprehension skills, and language skills for the word family “-ook”, the vowel sound “e”, and the exclamation mark. The students will make a make word lesson using the short “e” words from the story to the word family “-ook”. Students will utilize their creative stories to complete their word lesson.
Part 5
- Students will locate all “-ook” words in the story and other known words.
- Students will complete a word family or a “Make Words” lesson using the short “e” and the “-ook” family.
Assessment
The Students will be evaluated by their participation in discussions, their use of technology and their final story, graph product, and sucessful completion of the HyperStudio stack. The word lessons will be evlauated by each student’s participation and demonstration of understanding.

Comments
My students really enjoyed this lesson.
One caution: If you use the HyperStudio Stack for your students, it will still work without the MathoSaurus CD Rom. Just don’t push the Go To game button.
