A lesson plan for Grades 3–5 Visual Arts Education and Social Studies
In this unit from EDSITEment, students will recognize how people from different cultures and time periods have passed down the tradition of quiltmaking. Students will research how art and history are connected through quilts and the purposes and uses quilts served in different places and cultures in the past.

Grade 3
- Goal 3: The learner will organize the components of a work into a cohesive whole through knowledge of organizational principles of design and art elements.
- Objective 3.03: Identify geometric shapes: circle, square, rectangle, triangle, diamond, oval, octagon, and pentagon.
- Goal 5: The learner will understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures.
- Objective 5.01: Identify the main purposes for art in a society.
- Objective 5.02: Differentiate between decorative and functional purpose in one's own artwork.
