In this lesson, students focus on forming numbers to meet specific requirements, read information carefully, and try to understand how mathematical language is important in finding appropriate solutions. Using the problem-solving strategies of looking for patterns and establishing an organized list will aid students in finding all the possible solution sets. Illuminations provides an activity sheet and instructions for completing the lesson.

Students will:

  • Experiment with numbers to find all possible ways to multiply three digits and get a product of 24.
  • Explore the ways three digits can be placed together to form different three-digit numbers.

NCTM Standards and Expectations:

  • Understand the place-value structure of the base-ten number system and be able to represent and compare whole numbers and decimals.
  • Develop fluency with basic number combinations for multiplication and division and use these combinations to mentally compute related problems, such as 3050.

Mathematics (2004)

Grade 5

  • Goal 1: Number and Operations - The learner will understand and compute with non-negative rational numbers.
    • Objective 1.01: Develop number sense for rational numbers 0.001 through 999,999.
      • Connect model, number word, and number using a variety of representations.
      • Build understanding of place value (thousandths through hundred thousands).
      • Compare and order rational numbers.
      • Make estimates of rational numbers in appropriate situations.
    • Objective 1.03: Develop flexibility in solving problems by selecting strategies and using mental computation, estimation, calculators or computers, and paper and pencil.

Grade 6

  • Goal 1: Number and Operations - The learner will understand and compute with rational numbers.
    • Objective 1.03: Compare and order rational numbers.
    • Objective 1.04: Develop fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of non-negative rational numbers.
      • Analyze computational strategies.
      • Describe the effect of operations on size.
      • Estimate the results of computations.
      • Judge the reasonableness of solutions.
    • Objective 1.07: Develop flexibility in solving problems by selecting strategies and using mental computation, estimation, calculators or computers, and paper and pencil.
