Algebra in balance

A lesson plan for Grades 6–8 Mathematics
Students use the balance pans tool to explore algebraic expressions and determine if algebraic expressions are equal. After demonstrating how to use the interactive balance plan application, the teacher leads students in activities to better understand the coordinate plane. Illuminations provides links to an interactive learning tool, detailed directions, and an activity sheet necessary for completing the lesson.
Students will:
- Understand that balance pans actually balance when an equation is solved.
- Recognize that the intersection of two graphs indicates the solution a system of equations.
NCTM Standards and Expectations:
- Represent, analyze, and generalize a variety of patterns with tables, graphs, words, and, when possible, symbolic rules.
- Identify functions as linear or nonlinear and contrast their properties from tables, graphs, or equations.
- Relate and compare different forms of representation for a relationship.
- Develop an initial conceptual understanding of different uses of variables.
- Recognize and generate equivalent forms for simple algebraic expressions and solve linear equations.
- Model and solve contextualized problems using various representations, such as graphs, tables, and equations.
- Use graphs to analyze the nature of changes in quantities in linear relationships.
