Finding a rule for the number of hits is only the first step in exploring the Paper Pool game. Students can gain a deeper understanding of the patterns by considering graphical representations of the results. The teacher engages students in a discussion about how they could graph the data they collected in previous lessons in the unit. Then, the class discusses and labels the parts of the graph. Illuminations provides a power point show, directions, and handouts necessary for completing the lesson.

Students will:

  • Create graphs using data regarding the Number of Hits.
  • Interpret the graphs.

NCTM Standards and Expectations:

  • Represent, analyze, and generalize a variety of patterns with tables, graphs, words, and, when possible, symbolic rules.
  • Model and solve contextualized problems using various representations, such as graphs, tables, and equations.
  • Select, create, and use appropriate graphical representations of data, including histograms, box plots, and scatterplots.
