A lesson plan for Grades 4–5 Mathematics
Students learn about data analysis and probability in this lesson, using a box plot to identify the mean, mode, median and range of the data set. As an introductory activity, students work in small groups to find the mode and range of the number of letters in their names. Then, using a sample menu, students calculate the prices of several combinations of items and figure out the mean, mode, median, and range of the selections. As a class, students construct a human box plot using yarn.
Students will:
- Compute prices from a menu.
- Construct and read box plots.
- Identify the mean, median, mode, and range.
The NCTM Standards and Expectations covered in this lesson include:
- Collecting data using observations, surveys, and experiments.
- Representing data using tables and graphs such as line plots, bar graphs, and line graphs.
- Describing the shape and important features of a set of data and compare related data sets, with an emphasis on how the data are distributed.
- Using measures of center, focusing on the median, and understand what each does and does not indicate about the data set.
