A lesson plan for Grades 3–5 Mathematics
Students explore commutative properties, examine patterns when one factor is 6, and record known facts. Reasoning is the process standard applied in this lesson. After reviewing multiplication tables up to the factors of 5 using a skip count. Then, students play a dice game and write multiplication sentences in a multiplication game. Students find number patterns on the Hundreds Chart and color in the boxes in order to show them how to skip count by 6. Students participate in other activities in pairs in order to master multiplication tables through 6.
Students will be able to do the following:
- Find the products of two one-digit numbers with factors to 5.
- Skip count by 6.
- Explore the commutative property of multiplication.
- Find products on a Multiplication Chart.
NCTM Standards and Expectations covered in this lesson include:
- Understanding the effects of multiplying and dividing whole numbers.
- Developing fluency with basic number combinations for multiplication and division and using these combinations to mentally compute related problems, such as 3050.
- Selecting appropriate methods and tools for computing with whole numbers from among mental computation, estimation, calculators, and paper and pencil according to the context and nature of the computation and use the selected method or tools.
