A lesson plan for Grades 3–5 Mathematics
In this lesson, students conduct a survey and create bar graphs. After the teacher divides students into groups, the class participates in a series of math lessons that focus on a food court. Students learn how to make bar graphs using the data they collect. Then, using a sample menu, students create graphs using a graphing tool provided by Illuminations.
Students will be able to do the following:
- Conduct a survey to answer a question.
- Create bar graphs.
- Compare bar graphs in different orientations.
- Find the mode of a set of data.
NCTM Standards and Expectations covered in this lesson include:
- Designing investigations to address a question and consider how data-collection methods affect the nature of the data set.
- Representing data using tables and graphs such as line plots, bar graphs, and line graphs.
- Collecting data using observations, surveys, and experiments.
