During interactive read-aloud sessions that explore Actual Size and If You Hopped Like a Frog, students identify and analyze elements of author’s craft in conveying mathematical information about the size and abilities of a wide range of animals. After a read-aloud of Actual Size, students discuss the animals in the book and how the author presents their size. Then, the teacher reads If You Hopped like a Frog, a children’s book that compares human feats like jumping with those same actions in animals. Students discuss their observations and how the author and illustrator hook the reader’s attention. Once both books have been read, the teacher challenges students compare the two by creating a Venn diagram. In the next activity, students research an animal and its attributes and measurements. After students have conducted their research, they complete a graphic organizer to help develop their thoughts and create a project illustrating the information. This lesson plan also suggests a variety of project ideas and extension opportunities and provides links to helpful student-friendly sites for researching animals.
