Students analyze dystopian societies in this lesson that uses clips of the futuristic film, The Matrix. The teacher introduces the idea of utopias by engaging students in a discussion about the characteristics of “perfect” societies. After viewing a clip of the film, students are challenged to compare dystopias and utopias using a Venn diagram. Readwritethink provides several links to graphic organizers, guiding questions, and resources for teachers using film to teach about dystopias. This lesson offers several extension ideas and resources for evaluating other works that focus on dystopian societies.
