A lesson plan for Grade 4 Visual Arts Education

In this ARTSEDGE lesson, students experience the art and culture of Chinese calligraphy and Chinese ink painting through watercolor painting and Chinese instrumental folk music. They learn basic calligraphy strokes for the creation of Chinese writing as an art form and create paintings in the style of Chinese ink painting. Grade 4

  • Goal 1: The learner will develop critical and creative thinking skills and perceptual awareness necessary for understanding and producing art.
    • Objective 1.01: Expand the sense of environment to include global awareness as a source of ideas for imagery.
  • Goal 2: The learner will develop skills necessary for understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes.
    • Objective 2.02: Use additional art media, techniques and processes which may include:
      • Fibers - stitchery, a variety of fiber weaving techniques, felting and quilting
      • Cut paper - complex symmetrical folding and cutting;
      • Sculpture - experiments with varied tools including small hand tools.
    • Objective 2.03: Increase skills with familiar materials.
  • Goal 5: The learner will understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures.
    • Objective 5.03: Compare works of art from different times and cultures.
    • Objective 5.06: Discuss themes which are most important to a particular culture.
