A lesson plan for Grade 5 English Language Arts, Visual Arts Education, and Social Studies
This ARTSEDGE lesson uses photographs to describe the transition from old world to New World experienced by immigrants to the United States. Students gain an understanding of the new life of immigrants in this country, and learn how the medium of photography can record and recount history.
North Carolina Curriculum Alignment
Visual Arts Education (2001)
Grade 5
- Goal 5: The learner will understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures.
- Objective 5.07: Demonstrate a sense of history (what came before and after) regarding cultures and works of art.
Social Studies (2003)
Grade 5
- Goal 3: The learner will examine the roles various ethnic groups have played in the development of the United States and its neighboring countries.
- Objective 3.04: Hypothesize how the differences and similarities among people have produced diverse American cultures.
- Goal 4: The learner will trace key developments in United States history and describe their impact on the land and people of the nation and its neighboring countries.
- Objective 4.02: Explain when, where, why, and how groups of people settled in different regions of the United States.
