In this lesson, one of a two-part unit from Illuminations titled “Mathematics at the Mall,” students develop number sense in and around the shopping mall. They explore the allotment of space within a mall by generating a class list of stores typically found in a shopping center or mall. They then categorize stores into general categories, such as women's clothing, food service, and so on, and conduct research about malls in their own area. Finally, students plan a mall and create a scale drawing.

Grade 6

  • Goal 1: Number and Operations - The learner will understand and compute with rational numbers.
    • Objective 1.02: Develop meaning for percents.
      • Connect the model, number word, and number using a variety of representations.
      • Make estimates in appropriate situations.
  • Goal 2: Measurement - The learner will select and use appropriate tools to measure two- and three-dimensional figures.
    • Objective 2.01: Estimate and measure length, perimeter, area, angles, weight, and mass of two- and three-dimensional figures, using appropriate tools.
    • Objective 2.02: Solve problems involving perimeter/circumference and area of plane figures.
