A lesson plan for Grade 6 Science
In this lesson from Xpeditions, students will watch a video about photosynthesis. They will then transfer their understanding of this topic to a consideration of how trees can help reduce the negative impacts of the greenhouse effect. They will read a Web page describing the greenhouse effect, carbon dioxide's role as a greenhouse gas, and the role of humans in exacerbating this effect.
Students will also browse the Web site of an organization that sponsors tree planting programs and consider how these programs might help reduce or slow down the increase of the greenhouse effect. They will conclude by writing paragraphs telling younger kids about the benefits of trees and plants.

Grade 6
- Goal 4: The learner will investigate the cycling of matter.
- Objective 4.03: Examine evidence that green plants make food.
- Photosynthesis is a process carried on by green plants and other organisms containing chlorophyll.
- During photosynthesis, light energy is converted into stored energy which the plant, in turn, uses to carry out its life processes.
- Objective 4.04: Evaluate the significance of photosynthesis to other organisms:
- The major source of atmospheric oxygen is photosynthesis.
- Carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere and oxygen is released during photosynthesis.
- Green plants are the producers of food that is used directly or indirectly by consumers.
- Objective 4.03: Examine evidence that green plants make food.
