CareerStart lessons: Grade six

This activity combines math, art, and writing, as students create a scale drawing of a toy car and reflect on how math can be used in marketing careers. You may choose to do this after the end-of-grade tests as an enrichment activity when you can devote more time, energy, and effort.

Learning outcomes

  • Students will calculate the dimensions of a toy car to create a scale drawing.
  • Students will understand how mathematical concepts are used in marketing careers.

Teacher planning

Materials needed

  • Student handouts:
    • “Scale Drawing Problem-Solving Activity”
    • Reflection questions
  • Toy cars (Ask students to bring toy cars from home.)
  • Centimeter graph paper

Time required for lesson

Approximately 2 class periods and homework time both nights

Procedure

  1. Conduct a class discussion about careers in which a person might need to use scale drawings.
  2. Hand out the problem-solving activity, reflection questions, and graph paper, and explain the problem faced by the marketing team in the activity.
  3. Have students complete the problem-solving activity and reflection questions.
