2.6 Marketing careers: Working with scale drawings
This activity combines math, art, and writing, as students create a scale drawing of a toy car and reflect on how math can be used in marketing careers. You may choose to do this after the end-of-grade tests as an enrichment activity when you can devote more time, energy, and effort.
- Students will calculate the dimensions of a toy car to create a scale drawing.
- Students will understand how mathematical concepts are used in marketing careers.
- Student handouts:

- Reflection questions
- Toy cars (Ask students to bring toy cars from home.)
- Centimeter graph paper
Time required for lesson
Approximately 2 class periods and homework time both nights
- Conduct a class discussion about careers in which a person might need to use scale drawings.
- Hand out the problem-solving activity, reflection questions, and graph paper, and explain the problem faced by the marketing team in the activity.
- Have students complete the problem-solving activity and reflection questions.

- Is the Statue of Liberty’s Nose Too Long?
- This math activity challenges students to think about the scale of the Statue of Liberty in relation to the ratio of the length of their own nose to their own arm. This is a great example of why scale is important!
- Floor Plan Your Classroom
- In this activity, students will make an architectural floor plan of their classroom to scale.
