Important Message about LEARN NC

LEARN NC is evaluating its role in the current online education environment as it relates directly to the mission of UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education (UNC-CH SOE). We plan to look at our ability to facilitate the transmission of the best research coming out of UNC-CH SOE and other campus partners to support classroom teachers across North Carolina. We will begin by evaluating our existing faculty and student involvement with various NC public schools to determine what might be useful to share with you.

Don’t worry! The lesson plans, articles, and textbooks you use and love aren’t going away. They are simply being moved into the new LEARN NC Digital Archive. While we are moving away from a focus on publishing, we know it’s important that educators have access to these kinds of resources. These resources will be preserved on our website for the foreseeable future. That said, we’re directing our resources into our newest efforts, so we won’t be adding to the archive or updating its contents. This means that as the North Carolina Standard Course of Study changes in the future, we won’t be re-aligning resources. Our full-text and tag searches should make it possible for you to find exactly what you need, regardless of standards alignment.

  • Students will use probability (independent events) to predict the likelihood of occurrence of two unrelated health conditions.
  • Students will understand how math can be applied to careers in medicine.

One class period


  1. This lesson requires that students know some basic background information about certain medical careers. Write the following key terms and definitions on the board, and be sure the students understand them:
    The branch of medicine that deals with the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents (from newborn to age 18 or 19).
    The branch of medicine that focuses on health promotion and the prevention and treatment of disease and disability in later life. The term can be distinguished from gerontology, which is the study of the aging process itself. The term comes from the Greek “geros” meaning “old man” and “iatros” meaning “healer.” In the USA, geriatricians are primary care physicians who are board-certified in either Family Practice or Internal Medicine and have also acquired the additional training necessary to obtain the Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Geriatric Medicine.
  2. Review independent events with the class.
  3. Conduct a class discussion about the following:
    • Why do health professionals need to know the probabilities mentioned in this lesson?
    • How will this knowledge help them when dealing with patients? Talk about screening for risks and the probability of certain illnesses in reference to age, gender, ethnic group, genetic ties, etc.
  4. Guided practice: Walk students though the example problems on the “Let’s Review” handout.
  5. Independent practice: Have students complete the handout “A Career in the Medical Field Might be Neat!”
