Forests and fires: The longleaf pine savanna

By Dirk Frankenberg

This Carolina Environmental Diversity Explorations “virtual field trip” examines the role of fire in maintaining the longleaf pine savanna. You’ll learn how trees and grasses adapted to regular fire and how this ecosystem came to depend on it, and see their adaptations play out through various stages of controlled burns and their aftermaths. You’ll also see rare plants and other rare plant communities, including pocosin wetlands and a cypress savanna, found in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
