Grassy Bald on Round Bald

Figure 2 shows the grassy bald on Round Bald with ancient gneiss exposed in the foreground, and other grassy balds on high ridge crests in the background. The gneiss here looks pretty dull because its separation of minerals is masked by weathering and lichen overgrowth.

Definitions

bald n.
An area lacking a natural or usual covering.
gneiss n.
A banded or foliated metamorphic rock, usually of the same composition as granite.
lichen n.
A fungus that grows symbiotically (having a close relationship that benefits both objects) with algae, resulting in a composite organism that forms a crust-like growth on rocks or tree trunks.
