Small sand volume barrier islands: Environmental processes and development risks

By Dirk Frankenberg

This Carolina Environmental Diversity Explorations “virtual field trip” explores the nature and structure of barrier islands with small sand volume — only a few small dunes and no sandy ridges between the beach and the salt marsh. Built structures on these islands are highly susceptible to damage from hurricanes. This trip provides high-resolution photographs of two such islands, Masonboro (which has not been developed) and Topsail (which has been developed). Its companion field trip, Large Sand Volume Barrier Islands, should be taken next, for comparison.
