Figure 6 shows that the same plants found in pocosins are also found under pond pines as well as in poorly drained peat filled depressions of all sorts. Here we can see these plants growing on peat around and under a stand of pond pines.

We will now move away from upland habitats and into low-lying wetland habitats along coastal plain rivers. That makes our imaginary travel easier, because we can go by boat. After all, if you are going on a virtual trip, you might just as well go in the toy of your choice. I will leave that choice to you, because we will not go anywhere with dangerously rough or shallow water. You also can leave your life preserver behind, there will be no safety inspections along this waterway.

An accumulation of partially decayed vegetable matter formed in wetlands or peatlands (also called bogs or tropical swamp forests). Dried peat can be used as fuel.
wetland n.
Land located between terrestrial (land-based) and aquatic environments that have saturated or nearly saturated soils most of the year; also called bogs, ponds, estuaries, and marshes. [more]
