3.2 Activity: Quinceañera
Form a committee with some friends who can take you to a Latino tienda or mercado in your community. Divide up responsibility for finding certain articles that are used for a quinceañera, such as cards or invitations, dresses, different bolos, etc. Ask questions about the use of things you are not familiar with. You might find things more associated with a wedding or first communion, for example. If that is the case, make a list of what other festivals or ceremonial occasions you found things for. Have your committee discuss your findings and make some observations you can use in a dialogue on the importance of festivals, and make comparisons of other ways cultures mark becoming an adult. What are similarities or differences between various cultures’ treatment of adulthood?
