The Changing Face of Mexico

LEARN NC was a program of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Education from 1997 – 2013. It provided lesson plans, professional development, and innovative web resources to support teachers, build community, and improve K-12 education in North Carolina. Sharon Sullivan Mújica, project director, received one of the first grants given by the UNC Center for Public Service to create The Changing Face of Mexico. She has been the Outreach Director of the Institute of Latin American Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill and the Duke-UNC Program in Latin American Studies since the early 1990’s. Her many outreach activities include the planning, organization, and implementation of seminars and conferences for North Carolina educators and college faculty in the Southeast and Middle Atlantic states. She also researches and writes materials to enhance these outreach programs. She is the Chair of the Outreach Council of the UNC Title VI Centers, and a member of the executive committee of the National Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP).

Ken Stewart and Chapel Hill High School have worked with the Outreach Office of the Institute of Latin American Studies for the past ten years. They served as community partners for the Changing Face of Mexico project to help meet the need for assistance and outreach to schools across the state. Ken Stewart developed and helped produce the video portion of the project. He taught Spanish language and Latin American culture at Chapel Hill High School for fourteen years and has led numerous workshops across the country in curriculum development and methodology.

William M. Wisser is a graduate student in the Department of History at the University of North Carolina. During 1999 he was a Program Assistant in the Outreach Office of the Institute of Latin American Studies and worked on the Changing Face of Mexico as a contributor. He also was responsible for producing some of the multimedia components of the project.

Audrey Heining-Boynton is a Professor in the School of Education and Department of Romance Languages at UNC. Her area of specialty is performance-based instruction and Spanish language pedagogy. She has published works on multiculturalism and bilingual education.

David Carlson is a graduate student in the Department of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Claudio Fuentes is a graduate student in the Department of Political Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. They are employed as program assistants by the Institute of Latin American Studies.

Thomas H. Cox is the manager of the ATN, Video Services, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a unit within the ATN Center for Instructional Technology, which provides comprehensive video support services to the entire UNC Chapel Hill campus community.

Andrew A. Brawn is a multimedia consultant at UNC’s ATN, Video Services. He provides technical, analytical, training and creative guidance to University faculty, staff and students in the preparation of multimedia, web-based, instructional and other programs and applications for use in distance education or to supplement on-campus courses.

Todd Gaul is a free-lance photographer and videomaker. He worked extensively for the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill before creating his own company.
