1.4 Copyright and licensing

Copyright holder

Regardless of any copyright information provided in creator and provider records, if possible, list the copyright holder of a page or media. If copyright holder is unknown, list “Unknown”.

If copyright has expired, do not list the creator as copyright holder.

Copyright date

Year of copyright. If copyright has expired, do not provide.

License

Select from menu. Options are various public licenses, public domain, and “all rights reserved.”

Copyright remarks

Use this field if the copyright information provided requires explanation.

• If the license is public domain, provide an explanation of why the work is believed to be in the public domain, e.g.:
  • Copyright for this work has expired.
  • This work was created by the U.S. government and is not eligible for copyright.
• If the original work has fallen into the public domain but copyright in the digitization is held by a repository, you may wish to note this.
