Everest in the distance

After trekking many days, Chip gets his first glimpse of Mount Everest — the tall peak on the far left. The peak just left of center is Lhotse, and the dramatic peak to the right is Ama Dablam. Although Ama Dablam appears taller in this photo because it is closer, Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world at 29,029 feet above sea level. (Learn more)

Chip took this photograph during a rest day in the village of Namche, after a pleasant trek with beautiful views of Ama Dablam. Ama Dablam is possibly the most photographed mountain in the Himalayan range. The name comes from the words “ama,” which means mother or grandmother, and “dablam,” the name for the sacred charm box worn by Sherpa women around their necks. The hanging glacier on the mountain is said to resemble this pendant, and the mountain’s name can be roughly translated to “mother’s necklace” or “mother’s charm box.”
