The trail to Namche

As Chip and members of his group hike into the Himalayan mountains, they encounter porters, women, and children carrying heavy loads of goods on their backs to sell at the market in Namche, Nepal. Yaks share the narrow path, also carrying great weights. (Learn more)

On March 28th, the climbers arrived in Namche, the last town on the trek before reaching Everest Base Camp. Namche is located in the Khumbu area in northeastern Nepal — the region where Mount Everest is found. The Namche Bazaar is the center of commercial activity in the Khumbu region, for both locals and visitors.

Namche is 11,286 feet above sea level, and Chip’s group stayed in the town for a few days to acclimate to the high altitude. While staying in town, they visited a Sherpa museum established in 1994 by Sir Hillary and a school founded by Sir Edmund Hillary in nearby Khumjung. Chip notes in his journal that “it is so impressive to see how much Sir Hillary gave back to the great people of Nepal.”
