The word baris means line or row, and refers to the group formation in which the dance is typically performed: Traditional baris dances were ceremonial performances by groups of four to twelve men. Modern baris dances are non-ceremonial, and can be performed solo. There are many different kinds of baris dances, with the different styles named after the weapons carried by the dancers.
