As you become adept at miscue analysis, you may find other additions to your coding that are particularly helpful. Although it is not suggested in any texts I have read on miscue analysis, I find it helpful to code student miscues while the student is reading in one color — let’s say green. Then, when the session is over and I am listening to the tape recording of the reading, I mark miscues that I missed in another color, such as black. This helps me to see if there are certain miscues I am regularly missing with students when they are reading live for me. This practice helps me to be more attuned to my students and what they are reading rather than what I am expecting to hear.
