French colonization and Vietnam wars

Photographs by Margery Freeman · Text by Lorraine Aragon

The national borders of Southeast Asia have emerged only since the second half of the twentieth century. France conquered “Vietnam and Cambodia” as protectorates in the 1800s. Two “Vietnam wars” after World War II established Vietnam as an independent, Communist nation, but only after great hardship and much bloodshed. Since the 1990s, Vietnam has opened for tourism many of the sites from its war with the United States.
